By now everyone has a smartphone and many people even have more than one, perhaps because they have replaced the old one or to keep two phones together. Compared to old cell phones, modern smartphones are however more similar to computers of which the phone is only one of the many functions available.
Having therefore an extra smartphone, it is not strictly necessary that the SIM card is inserted in it to have a cellular signal, because it can also work without a signal, without giving up your favorite apps and, why not, also to make calls and send messages.
Basically, let's see here how you can use an Android or iPhone or even Windows smartphone without buying and paying for a SIM card and, consequently, without a cellular signal .
The only problem of using a smartphone without a data SIM inside is that it cannot be connected to the internet when we are on the street, therefore remaining completely isolated.
However, if we are at home, at school, in the office or at the bar, we should have access to a Wifi network and connect the phone to the internet even if it has no data SIM .
Once connected to the internet, you can do almost anything you would do with a data SIM with a phone number.
1) WhatsApp is an app that cannot work without a SIM card, because each account is tied to a phone number.
In reality, however, as seen also in the article on the tricks and secrets of Whatsapp, if you can activate Whatsapp on a tablet, you can also activate it on a phone without a SIM.
Once activated Whatsapp it will become possible to exchange messages and even phone friends from the application, without spending a penny.
2) Facebook works great even without a cellular network and the Messenger app allows you to make free calls to friends if your smartphone is connected in wifi.
3) Call
Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype and other apps work to make free calls from your mobile phone using the internet connection, for free.
3) Receive calls
If you are connected to one of the VOIP apps to make calls, you can of course also receive calls.
However, not having a telephone number, it is obviously impossible for those who use the normal telephone to call us.
However, there are some apps that provide the phone number.

4) GPS navigator
A smartphone without a SIM can work very well as a GPS navigator to keep in the car.
Since there is no cellular data network, apps like Google Maps will not work, but thanks to the apps with offline maps you can download every map from home and use the navigator using the GPS of the phone, without the need for an internet connection.
The best apps of this type, free, are currently Nokia Here Maps and Maps.me, both for iPhone and Android.

Do not overlook the fact that the battery of this smartphone, not having to search for the cellular network, will last much longer.
