How to control data traffic consumption on iPhone

How many times it will have happened not knowing how many GB of data traffic we have consumed on our iPhone, in particular after a long journey or after having seen various streams streamed on the mobile "> Consume less internet data on 3G / 4G traffic and WIFI (Android and iPhone)

1) Check consumption of data traffic on iPhone

The easiest way to control the consumption of data traffic on the iPhone is to take advantage of the settings already present in the operating system menu, so as not to have to install any type of app.
From our iPhone, click on the Settings icon -> Mobile and make sure that the Cellular data item is active; if we travel abroad we must take care to also activate the Data Roaming item, present in the Cellular Data Options menu (where a preview of the aforementioned item is visible).
Now that the data connection is active on the iPhone, just scroll through the menu until you find the cellular data section, in which the total consumptions will be indicated, in roaming consumptions and the consumptions for each individual app installed on the phone.

If any app consumes too much or we don't want it to connect via data network, just remove the check mark next to it to disable cellular data; this way, disabled apps only use Wi-Fi for data.
Scrolling down we will also get the data reset manually by clicking on the Reset statistics item, so that we can resume the count of the data traffic consumed every month or according to our needs.

2) Best apps to control data traffic consumption

As we have seen, the system integrated in the iPhone is not very interactive, since it will not warn you of the achievement of a desired traffic threshold, leaving us the scruple of going to check every few minutes.
If we are looking for something more powerful and interactive, we can install the My Data Manager app on our iPhone, available for free download from here -> My Data Manager .

With this app we will be able to set our personalized data traffic threshold (based on the offer active on our iPhone) and obtain precise information on the consumption of the apps, on the consumption by the system apps and, much more importantly, obtain the blocking the data connection when the pre-set traffic threshold is reached.
In addition to blocking the connection, we can also receive notifications when certain thresholds are reached, so as to immediately realize consumption without where every time open the iPhone menu or this app.
Alternatively we will have to install specific apps from Italian operators, which offer a traffic control system with lots of notifications on the iPhone.
The apps that we can download for telephone operators in Italy are the following:
  • MyTIM Mobile
  • My Vodafone Italy
  • MyWind
  • My3 | Customer Area 3
  • Poste Mobile
  • MyFastweb

Most of these apps have a data traffic control system, so you can immediately check the level of data consumed and perceived by the operator himself.

3) How to save data traffic

If we have a tariff plan with many GBs available, the data control can be done more superficially without wasting too much time (finishing 50GB is difficult, if we don't do P2P or we don't see handcuffed films).
However, this takes on a completely different meaning if we travel abroad: often we will only have 1 or 2 GB available to surf the Internet, with really exorbitant costs in the event of roaming data traffic exceeded (also within the European Union, where there are however different traffic limits than we get in Italy).
To avoid nasty surprises when returning home, we therefore recommend limiting the consumption of data traffic to the minimum and using WiFi technology as much as possible, given the presence of numerous hotspots around the world.
To further save data traffic we can apply the following tips on the iPhone:
  • We disable app synchronization : go to the Settings menu -> General -> Update app in the background and disable the item of the same name. We can also disable the update only for the apps that consume the most, by acting on the buttons next to each app.
  • Disable the use of the data network for some apps : go to the Settings menu and scroll until you find the app to disable (also system apps such as Maps and Music ); once the menu is open, we deactivate the cellular data item present among the various items, so as to completely prevent the use of the cellular network. The operation must be repeated for each app that we do not intend to use under data coverage. The disabled apps can connect to the Internet only and exclusively via WiFi connection.
  • We disable the data network when not needed : scroll from the bottom edge or from the top left corner (from iPhone X onwards) to open the control center and click on the antenna icon, so as to disable the data connection when we have sufficient WiFi coverage.

By following these simple rules, we can save data traffic when it is provided in limited quantities (when we travel abroad) or when our traffic threshold is very close to the limit.
