In Google Chrome, a really smart, useful and advantageous new function has been recently added (I don't know from which version precisely): the cancellation of the tabs in the background . This feature, called by Google Tab Discarding developers, makes sure that even if you open many sites together or if you are also using some other program on your PC (Window and Mac), Chrome will try to minimize the consumption of system resources, canceling the cards that he deems not a priority.
Canceling is like a freeze, in the sense that the cards are not terminated or closed, but only suspended so that they do not take up RAM on the computer.
Clicking them they are automatically reloaded, returning available as before.

This feature could be added in Chrome via some extensions to suspend inactive tabs and save memory.
Now, however, it is already integrated so, in case, you can remove the various extensions such as The Great Suspender and let Chrome manage the memory and CPU occupied by open sites automatically and intelligently.
According to the documentation, for each open tab, Chrome occupies about 50 MB of memory.
10 open tabs occupy at least 450 MB of memory just to keep them in the background.
However, if at least 5 of these 10 tabs are canceled because they are unused in the background, the browser becomes lighter and works better.
Chrome's tab cancellation activates on its own when a high RAM memory consumption is detected in the system and automatically suspends the tabs of lesser interest .
Even if they are finished, these tabs still remain visible on the top bar of Chrome and just click on their title to reload them in the same way they were before, including the memory of the sites seen before or after on those same tabs.
To manage this feature there are two options on Chrome's experimental features page.
Specifically, open a tab with the address chrome: // flags and look for the options on the page:
- automatic-tab-discarding to enable the card cancellation (on Default it is active so change this value only to disable it)
- show-saved-copy to display a button that loads the cached version of a page if it is offline.
Remember to press the bottom button restart now to save the changes.
You can manage this cancellation of the tabs in Chrome also manually, by opening the page chrome: // discards /
This page lists all the open tabs, with the indication "discarded" for those that have been canceled.
For the others, however, there is a link to manually cancel the card.
At the bottom there is a link to click to cancel them all at once.
It will be like closing Chrome, with the difference that visually the tabs will still be there, ready only to be clicked.
The button to cancel all the tabs together can also be added to the favorites bar, adding a new one with the address chrome: // discards / run
