How to add images or videos to Word

When we use Word we immediately think of the endless documents with large rivers of words, all to be read in one breath without any interruption.
If the document we are making is too "bare and simple" in our eyes, we can make it even more beautiful and original by adding images or even small videos inside the text.
In this guide we will see how to add images or videos to Word when writing our documents.
This guide is suitable both for those who approach the world of PCs and office programs for the first time and for those who have used Office and its software for a lifetime but cannot orient themselves well with the new features and new menus that now accompany all new Office releases.

As with the other similar guides we have created, we will show you in separate sections how to add images and videos to our documents created with Word, so that we can always keep up with the times and embellish all types of documents.
But if we cannot use Office and Word, we will also show you the guide to use LibreOffice Writer, i.e. the free alternative to Office that can be used without limits both in the business and at home.
NOTE : remember that adding any multimedia element to the document weighs down the file itself, risking to make it so heavy that it can no longer be conveniently transferred via email.
We therefore only add images and videos that are essential to make the document more coherent, we avoid creating a doc all images or videos.
1) How to add images to Word
To add an image on the disk of the computer in use, open the document that we are creating with Word, click on the top of the Insert menu and finally on the Images button.

The classic file manager window will open where we can search for the folder where the image we have decided to add to the document is present; once selected we click OK to add it to the document.
If we wanted to add images on the fly, it is good to know that Word easily supports copy and paste, so we can also open a file manager window and simply drag the image into the document, Word will do the rest.
Once the image has been added, we can resize it as desired by clicking on it and using one of the dots that will appear on the edges and corners of the image.

The small arrow-shaped icon that turns on itself, present at the top of the added image, allows us to turn the image at will, so that we can adjust it as we like best.
The addition of an image will inevitably ruin the layout and formatting of the text, especially if we place it without criteria.
In this case we can move it simply by clicking in the center and moving it while holding down the left button; alternatively we can use the button in the upper right corner of the image, so that we can correctly orient the latter based on the text (we can center it, put it on the side or at the bottom).

In addition to inserting images on the PC disk, with Word we can also add images present online on the Web, so that we can add them on the fly without having to first download them locally.
To take advantage of this functionality, click on the Insert menu and this time click on the item Online images .

A new window will open with a search engine (Bing) where we can search for any type of image on the web.
In addition to the images that we can search with the search bar, we can also take advantage of the predefined images presented by the program, divided into categories (Cars, Motorcycles etc.).

We choose the image to add and wait for Word to load it correctly into the document.
Another very useful feature related to images is the ability to upload photos and images on the OneDrive cloud; to exploit it, just open the item Images online already seen a little while ago and use the OneDrive button on the bottom left, so as to immediately access our cloud.
If we are not yet registered, we will have to enter the login credentials to the Microsoft account where we keep the photos or images to be used.
2) How to add videos to Word
If instead of an image we want to add a video to our Word document, we can do it by going to the Insert menu and clicking on the item Video online .

A new window will open in which we will be asked whether to add a YouTube video (simpler method) or whether to add a video from a site that supports embedding (i.e. the recovery of the Web code necessary for integration on other sites) .

If the video we intend to add is on YouTube, just search for it in the small search bar next to the item of the same name; once you find the right video from the list that will appear, just click Insert at the bottom of the window to correctly add it to the document.
If instead we have a video to embed, we retrieve the right code and insert it in the From embed code field of the video, so that we can add it to the document we are working on.
The video will behave like an image, tracing its functionality: we will be able to resize it or align it correctly to the text as we have already seen a while ago.

3) How to add multimedia elements from Writer (free)
If we don't want to use Office (which we remember is paid), we can focus on the free alternative LibreOffice, available without limits in any scenario (both in the office and at home).
Once the free suite is installed, we open the Writer program and, to insert images or videos to the document, click on the Insert menu, where we will find all the necessary items.

To add an image on the computer, click on Image and look for it in the management software that will open; alternatively we can open the image from Media -> Gallery .
To add a video on the PC instead, we will have to go to the Media -> Audio or video path then add the video that we have previously downloaded to the hard disk.
