To celebrate 10 years of the Apple App Store, the statistics company App Annie has published a report with the official ranking of the most downloaded iPhone and iPad apps in the world .
The data, which was compiled over 8 years until May 2018, provides an overview of the growth of the App Store, the apps that have earned the most and the most successful ones, in the world.
Obviously, many surprises are not to be expected, so Facebook is the most downloaded app ever on the App Store, followed by Facebook Messenger and YouTube, with Instagram and WhatsApp completing the list in fourth and fifth place.
Among the top 10 there are also some Chinese apps, little used or unknown here in Italy.
Among the most interesting statistics of the report we can summarize the report as follows:
- The app download rate worldwide for the Google Play Store is 70%, which is more than double the 30% share held by the App Store, which is normal given that Android smartphones are many more than iPhone.
- iPhone users, however, are more willing to spend money on the App Store which in fact has a market of 66% of net consumer spending, against 34% of the Google Play Store.
It is known that those who choose an Android phone, perhaps even cheap ones, are much less inclined to spend money while those who buy iPhones do not mind spending; this statistic is therefore not surprising at all.
- Games represent 31% of app downloads from the App Store and 75% of net consumer spending, because spending money is really easy on games.
- The United States is the country where the app download numbers are highest, followed by China and Japan (Italy is tenth in the download ranking, but does not appear in the ranking of the countries that spend the most on apps) .
- The App Store has over 2 million apps currently, while the total number of apps released on the App Store since its inception is over 4.5 million, with 77% represented by games.
