Google Assistant Settings (OK Google) on Android, iPhone and Home

Google Assistant is one of the most used voice assistants in the world together with Apple's Siri and Amazon Alexa, which can be used in Google Home devices or even in Android and iPhone smartphones. The Google Assistant, which can be called at any time saying aloud Ok Google, allows you to ask for information with voice commands, activate actions on the phone or even on other home automation devices such as the Google Home itself or the lights and switches connected in Wifi.
The Google assistant, evolution of what was called Google Now, is very intelligent in understanding requests, interactive and able to answer every question thanks to the fact that it is powered by the Google search engine.
In this guide we therefore see how to access the Google Assistant settings (and OK Google) to speak with the virtual assistant on Android and iPhone and how to find and use the options and settings to configure it, on smartphones and also on Google Home .

Configure Google Assistant settings on Android

To find out how Google Assistant works on every Android smartphone, therefore also a Samsung Galaxy or a Huawei P10, just open the Google app or touch the search bar, if present on the home screen and then open the settings by touching the button with three points bottom right. In Settings, you will find, under the Assistant tab, the set of options dedicated to Google Assistant that are used to configure it and find out how it works. Google Assistant Settings can also be accessed by holding down the Home button and then, when the Google Assistant is displayed, by touching the compass icon at the bottom of the screen; From here, touch then the profile picture and then Settings. Another way to open the settings is to ask the Google assistant by voice, " Google Assistant settings ".
Yet another way to start the Google Assistant is to install and use the separate Google Assistant app, which provides quick access to the artificial intelligence features of the Android phone.
In the Google Assistant Settings you can find the personal information tab, important for knowing how the assistant must call us (if by name or with a nickname) and to set home and work addresses that are used by the assistant to tell us if there are traffic problems every day.
The section dedicated to the assistant is the most important and is divided into several options:
  • Choice of language
  • Continuous conversation feature, so you don't always have to say Ok Google after every question if you start talking to the voice assistant.
  • Voice Match to improve the recognition of our voice.
  • Management and configuration or addition of smart home devices compatible with the Google assistant.
  • Set Routines, i.e. automatic actions based on time or other parameters.

Below is the Phone section where you can find the important option that turns Google Assistant on or off on your Android smartphone. Here you can also activate the possibility of calling it from any mobile phone screen (and not only when we open the Google app), always saying the command Ok Google aloud. If Google does not recognize our voice, here is the option to add and change the voice model .

Configure Google Assistant settings on iPhone

The settings of the Google assistant on the iPhone and how to activate or deactivate it as the phone's voice assistant are identical to those of Android smartphones. The only difference is that while on Android the Google settings are already present, on the iPhone you must first install the Google Assistant app for iPhone (and also that of Google Home seen above).
From the Google Assistant application, touch the profile image icon in the upper right corner and then, on the next screen, touch the Assistant tab to find all the configuration options.
Unfortunately on the iPhone it is not possible to call up the Google assistant saying OK Google from any screen, but it is always necessary to open the app in order to then speak and use the voice commands.

Configure Google Assistant settings on Google Home and Home Mini

To configure a Google Home device you can follow the steps to open the Google Assistant settings on your smartphone and then go to the Home tab. Here you can manage family members who use Google Home and then also devices, speakers and other services.
Another way to set up Google Home is via the Google Home app for Android or iPhone. From this application, tap the icon at the bottom right of the profile and then open the settings.
We will be back in the options section of the assistant, where you can change the settings of OK Google for Home devices .
Using OK Google and then the voice commands, therefore, not only can you send a message, find directions or call someone using your voice, but you can also listen to answers on general questions such as " what time does the sun come up ", " which long ago today ", " what the news says ", " when Lazio play ", " which cinema is closest ", " translate good morning in Japanese ", " find a Chinese restaurant "and so on.
For fun it is also possible to ask frivolous questions to the assistant as if he were a friend, for example " sing me a song ", " flip a coin ", " let's play a game ", " I'm bored ", " who are you " and much more.
While with Google Now the voice assistant was therefore clearly a robot, now it tries to be more human, like an increasingly true and advanced artificial intelligence.
