Run commands remotely on PC with smartphone or tablet

You can use the keyboard and mouse to type all the commands necessary to use a PC, but to write with the keyboard or use the mouse when you are away from the monitor (on the sofa or maybe on the bed in the room) you can use some programs that can to execute commands remotely or move the mouse pointer remotely.
In this guide I will show you which programs and which apps for portable devices (smartphone or tablet) you can use to control your PC remotely, with an eye to the configuration necessary to obtain complete control of your PC without other users being able to do the same.
For remote control and to carry out remote commands on a PC, it will be fundamental to connect your smartphone to the same WiFi network where the PC is connected, so that remote control can be carried out.
The guide below works to remotely control a PC remotely using a smartphone or tablet Samsung, Huawei or any Android device or even an iPhone or iPad

TeamViewer (free)
The first program you can use to run commands remotely on a PC is TeamViewer.
This program is free for personal use (as long as you install it on home computers it is fine, while on business or work computers it is payment) and the smartphone app is also available for free on both Apple and Android devices.
TeamViewer is also one of the simplest programs to configure to perform remote commands on a PC, in addition it also works "away from home": by using the data connection on the smartphone it is possible to control the PC left on at home as if I were physically present there.
To configure it, install TeamViewer on the PC to be controlled remotely.
The program is available for any operating system (Windows, Linux, OS X), to get it just click on the following link -> TeamViewer

Once the program is installed and started on your PC, you will immediately get a recognition number (Your ID) and a random password to control that specific PC remotely.

On the PC there is no need to do anything else, just make sure that this program remains open so you can control it remotely.
Take your mobile device now for control and install the TeamViewer specific app.
Here are the links to download TeamViewer for Android and TeamViewer for iOS (iPhone and iPad)
Once the app is downloaded, start it and, in the Connect menu, enter the ID obtained from the program on the PC and in the following screen the password.

Now you will be connected to the PC to be controlled remotely!
The app will show you the desktop as it is on your PC, you can move the mouse to open programs and manage files using the device's touch screen and you can type commands using the integrated keyboard on your smartphone or tablet.

The app and the program can be used without having to register for a TeamViewer account.
By opting for this option, however, you can get the following benefits:
  • Enable TeamViewer auto-start
  • Use a single password for access to all devices
  • Register and access all your PCs without requiring a password each time
You can register for a free TeamViewer account using the following link -> New TeamViewer account .

Unified Remote (free with limitations)
If you don't want to see the desktop on your mobile device but still want to control the mouse and keyboard remotely, you can use the free Unified Remote app that I had already talked about in the guide on how to turn on, use and turn off the computer from a smartphone .
This app uses a server (to be previously installed on the PC with Windows, Linux or OS X) to interface your smartphone or tablet with the PC
To configure it, install the following program on the PC to be controlled -> Unified Remote for Windows .

Once installed and started the program will immediately position itself in the system tray, ready to accept connections.

On the PC there is no need to do anything else, you just have to write down the IP address of the computer and the port number (9510 by default).
You can also get this information by double clicking on the Unified icon on the PC, a web window will open with the IP address to be used while the port number is in the address bar.

Once the PC is configured, it is time to switch to the smartphone or tablet on which to execute commands remotely. Here you can find Unified Remote for Android and Unified Remote for iPhone and iPad, just choose the right app based on the operating system of your portable device.
Now start the app and wait for the recognition system to find the server on your PC (obviously the latter must be turned on).
Once you find the server you will get a screen with all the commands that you can carry out remotely.

Specifically, the commands are:
  • Basic Input : with this option you can control the PC keyboard and mouse remotely;
  • File manager : you can access the folders and files on the PC;
  • Keyboard : allows you to quickly recall a keyboard to write on the PC from the touch screen;
  • Media : allows you to control playback and other options on multimedia programs such as Media Player, VLC, Kodi and others;
  • Power : check the settings to turn off or restart the PC remotely;
  • Screen : as on TeamViewer it allows you to see the PC desktop and to control the pointer remotely.
Using the + shaped button at the bottom right (or in the center in the case of Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad) you can add control of other multimedia apps or control the browser, streaming sites (YouTube, Netflix, Spotify etc. ) and so on.
The app is available for free but with limitations: some of the apps you can control are available only by unlocking the paid version.
If you only need keyboard and mouse control, you can still use the free version without time limits, always getting good remote PC control.
Other apps to perform remote commands on PC
If you did not like the apps and programs that you mentioned, you can use one of the following apps or programs as valid substitutes for executing remote commands on a PC:
  • AnyDesk
  • Chrome Remote Desktop (app for Google Chrome)
  • UltraVNC
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop (integrated in Windows Professional version)
  • TigerVNC
