How to update the SSD firmware

On a computer with SSD disk, if it has never been done or if you have just installed Windows 10, it is advisable to update the firmware of the SSD unit to make it more optimized and with better performance.
SSD manufacturers need to release firmware updates to correct technical problems and bugs that reveal themselves daily, especially after installing a new version of the operating system.
Sometimes the new SSD firmware can also offer performance improvements with better system compatibility and superior drive reliability.

The update process, for most SSDs, is very simple and can be done by the management program released directly by the manufacturer. Depending on the case, the update process can be automatic and risk-free or even more elaborate. You must therefore be careful and read all the warnings that the update program shows on the screen. In some cases there may be problems if the SSD is the C drive where Windows is installed while in other cases the firmware download is not automatic and you are asked to manually copy it to a USB stick to install it when the computer starts. I personally believe that if the firmware installation is not automatic, it is probably better to leave it alone, especially if everything works well.
First of all, you need to know what type of SSD disk is installed on your computer. To do this, search for and open, in the Start menu, Device Manager, expand the Disk drives section and read the name of the SSD.
Depending on the brand of the SSD, the programs to check and install the latest SSD firmware updates are:
- For all Samsung SSDs there is the Samsung Magician tool which has the function of automatic and smooth Firmware Update, very easy and immediate. Those with a Samsung Evo SSD don't hesitate to update the firmware as soon as possible.
- Intel has two different tools, one called the Intel SSD Toolbox for some models, the other Intel Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool for other models. In the download pages you can check which SSD disk is supported.
- Corsair has a management program called SSD Toolbox that can be used safely if the SSD is not the one where Windows is installed, otherwise it is better to read all the guides and decide whether to proceed or not. The program recommends a backup of all data before updating.
- Sandisk has its SSD Toolkit which allows you to create a USB stick with the firmware update on it.
It is better to install the update only if something is wrong.
- Kingston has a tool to update the firmware of the SSD, called SSD Manager, quick and easy, which requires manual download of the firmware.
