When the PC has a problem or has some error, the first thing to do, if possible, is to restart the computer. Restarting Windows is simple and you just need to find the button from the shutdown menu. However, a normal restart is not always possible or useful to solve some problems. For example, we have written an entire article to explain how many problems it is to restart the computer.
There are therefore other ways to restart Windows, which are worth listing, each useful for a certain purpose, more convenient, fast, fun, diagnostic or error-solving ways.

1) Restart with desktop shortcut
Right click on the desktop, go to new -> link and write in the path: shutdown.exe -r -t 05 -f
Go ahead, give a name and save. Instead of 05 you can also put 01 to do a faster restart (better not to use 00 which is too immediate). Then just double-click on the icon of the connection created to restart the PC quickly. The -f forces the programs to close, preventing any of them from preventing the PC from restarting. The icon of can also drag on the taskbar.
You can assign a key combination to this new desktop shortcut to restart your PC using the keyboard . To do this, right click on the link, go to Properties and then, at the shortcut key box, press and hold down the keys to be used to restart the computer (for example CTRL-ALT-8).
Note that you can add the desktop shutdown -a shortcut to cancel the shutdown or restart of the computer in case you are wrong.
2) Direct reboot to the recovery console
Only on Windows 10 is it possible to open the recovery console of the computer from Windows itself. Then press the key combination CTRL + L to open Settings, click on the shutdown button and, holding down the SHIFT key, click on Restart . The computer turns off and on again by presenting the tools screen to correct errors and restore Windows 10.

3) Restart from the Command Prompt
The command prompt allows you to restart your PC with various options otherwise impossible to obtain.
Then run the CMD command prompt and write shutdown to see the list of options. For example, if you want to force the restart with a 30 second delay, type shutdown / r / f / t 30 and press enter.
4) Scheduled restart
You can use the Windows Task Scheduler to restart your PC at specific times. From the Start menu, search for the scheduler and open it to create a new task from the Action menu. Give a name, check the box to run it with higher privileges.
Go to the Activation tab, click on New and select when you want the computer to restart.
In the Actions tab, press on New, choose Program and write shutdown.exe with arguments / r / F.
Press OK, go to Conditions and select the options according to what you prefer. In the end, save everything and the PC will automatically restart when programmed. This can be especially useful to those who never turn off the computer, to refresh it at least once a week.

5) Remote restart
If you use your PC from a local area network at home or in the office, you can restart any computer from one of these. To do this, you need to enable the option found in Windows Services.
Press the Windows-R keys and run the Services.msc command.
From the window that opens, find Remote Registry open it with a double click and change the default setting from Manual to Automatic .
From the Start menu, now search for " Allow Program from Windows Firewall " and, in the window that opens, put a cross next to the item Windows WMI Management Instrumentation and click OK.
Now, open the command prompt (looking for cmd from the start menu) write shutdown / ie press Enter to open the remote shutdown window.
Now press on Add ..., enter the name of the computer you want to control and press OK. Make sure you have selected Restart from the drop-down menu and then choose the other options as you prefer. For example, you can view a message on other computers to warn them of the impending restart. To function, you must have administrator access on all other computers.
An easier way to reboot a Windows PC remotely is to run the command from another computer: shutdown / r / f / m \\ [computer-to-shutdown-IP] -t 00
An alternative way to restart the PC remotely is by installing the free Shutter program on it, which works for this purpose, that is, to turn off or restart the PC from another computer on the network.

6) Restart of the computer with choice of the operating system
With some programs it is very easy, as already seen in another article, to restart the PC by choosing the system to load if configured in dual boot.
7) With another type of program it is also possible to restart the PC canceling any modification without saving anything . This is ideal in the case of a shared computer such as that of a library or hotel, or even to make a person learn the use of the computer without the possibility of it doing damage.
8) Restart Windows in safe mode
Starting the PC in safe mode is used to solve problems especially in the case of malware and viruses. In addition to the basic method, you can set Windows to restart in safe mode by pressing the Windows-R keys and then running msconfig . From the window that opens, go to the boot options and choose the safe mode.

9) Emergency restart
In Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 there is an option to do an emergency restart of the computer .
This is useful if there is a program that freezes Windows, if the computer does not shut down for some reason or if there was some strange error that cannot be solved except with a restart, then you can use this option very fast and very hidden, which very few know. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys to open the screen with blocking or user switching options.
Look at the bottom right to find the shutdown button and click on it while holding down the CTRL key on the keyboard . If the mouse doesn't work, use the TAB key until you get to the stop button and then press Enter on your keyboard. A window titled " Emergency restart " will then appear, and then " all unsaved information will be lost, use with caution ".
This option then makes an immediate and fast restart of the computer without saving any data, as would be done by pressing the reset button or by disconnecting the plug, without however risking damaging the disk.
